Advocacy

Arts for LA School Board Survey 2007
Arts for LA recently partnered with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission to conduct a survey to inform candidates as well as local stakeholders about the importance of arts education, its role in preparing students to participate in a 21
st century workforce as well as local, county and state resources that are available to school districts throughout the region.

Presidential Candidates Forum
ArtsVote 2008 will secure bold, new policy proposals in support of the arts and arts education in America from candidates during the 2008 presidential campaign. ArtsVote NH, a program of New Hampshire Citizens for the Arts and Americans for the Arts Action Fund, is holding a candidates forum. All presidential candidates will be invited to speak at this forum to share their positions on supporting the arts, arts education, and the creative economy in general. Thursday, November 29, 2007, between 4pm and 8pm. (Americans for the Arts).

Tucson City Ward III Youth Funders – Mentoring Grant Round
City Councilmember Karin Uhlich has incorporated Youth Voice in an exemplary way with the Youth Funders Group.  In partnership with Every Voice in Action, City Ward III has created a youth philanthropy program where young people living in Ward III meet to learn about philanthropy and grantmaking, discuss issues important to their Ward, and distribute $20,000 in City Youth Services funding. This year, the group has selected Mentoring as the focus of their grant round.  Proposals are due by 12:00 noon on November 20. For a copy of the RFP contact Susan Fry at 990-3646 or

National Education Grants
The Braitmayer Foundation is interested in funding K-12 curricular and school reform initiatives and professional development opportunities for teachers nationwide

Visual and Expressive Arts Grants
The National Museum of the American Indian Visual and Expressive Arts Grants program offers support to a wide range of arts activities with the goal of increasing the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary Native American arts. The NMAI considers the recognition of living artists of the Western Hemisphere to be of primary importance and will direct support to projects that strengthen the scholarship in this underserved field and create opportunities for new and innovative work. Grant amounts will be from $7500 to $15,000.

Arizona Alliance for Arts Education Essay Contest
What has art meant in your students’ lives and how has it enhanced his or her education?  Time to find out.  AAAE has announced the annual essay contest.  Have your 4th-12th grade students answer the question above in 400 words or less and they could win a luncheon with their state legislator and one chaperone.  The winners essay will also be read at the 2008 Governor’s Arts Awards Dinner.  Entries must be postmarked by December 7th.  For rules and entry forms email teniqua@artsed.org or call 602.264.0299.

Awards
Arizona Alliance for Arts Education Arts Advocate of the Year
Bonnie Sneed, Executive Director of the Arizona Alliance for Arts Education, received the Arizona Art Education Association’s 2007 Award for Arts Advocate of the Year.  Sneed moved from Ohio to Arizona nine years ago.  She is involved with the Arts in Education Council for Scottsdale Schools, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization established thirty-five years ago, in order to support high quality fine arts opportunities for her own children and is currently serving as its co-president, after serving as president for two years.  Her recent work with the Arizona Alliance for Arts Education, a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, takes her passion for arts education statewide. 

Toyota Teacher of the Year Award
Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award is given to educators who demonstrate exemplary efforts to help parents and children achieve their academic and non-academic goals.
