Next week, panelists from across Arizona will gather in Phoenix to evaluate nearly 300 grant applications as a part of the Arts Commission’s annual Review of Grants for Organizations and Schools. All panel meetings are open to the public.

Arizona Humanities Festival: American Jukebox
November 3, 2012
10:00 AM-4:00 PM
Civic Space Park in Downtown Phoenix

The Arizona Humanities Festival is vibrant celebration of the humanities that engages the imagination, explores ideas, and excites people to learn more about the world we share. The theme for this year, American Jukebox, will explore the evolution of American music. Over the course of our nation’s history, the musical traditions from our many cultures have combined to create new harmonies, from Native American to ragtime to country and so much more. This year’s festival provides a fascinating look at American styles of music and the unique part Arizona has played in crafting those melodies.

We seek to bring rich, humanities-based programs to the 2012 Festival. We are looking for music and dance performances, lectures, film screenings, interactive demonstrations, and storytelling. The committee will prioritize programs focused on American styles of music – music native to our country or created here. This includes (but is not necessarily limited to) Blues, Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz, Native American, Motown, Ragtime, early Rock and Roll, and Tejano.

All programs, including performances, must include a humanities component in order to provide context. This could include brief historical or cultural explanations before, after, or during performances. Programs must not exceed one hour in length.

We currently have a large garage space that we use to host weekly movie nights and occasional theatre events. We would like to close off the open side, make some repairs and turn it into an actual, fully equipped, working theatre for the community.

Volunteers will be expected to aid in some building and construction jobs, painting, rigging lights as well as working with the community on a performance project for the inauguration of the theatre.

The program for volunteers:
We are offering volunteers, who are so kindly coming to spend their summer helping the community of Baños, a well-organized program. As well as working on the theatre project, it includes, sightseeing, relaxation and adventure. It is important to us that our volunteers have a good time and a memorable experience.

Costs and dates:
(These prices are consistent with a minimum of 20 participants so why not bring some friends?). The 3 week program will take place from July 7th – July 30th 2012. The cost is $250. Air fare NOT included.

What is included in the price:
Pick up and drop off in Quito. First and last night’s accommodation in Quito and accommodation in Baños for the entire 3 weeks. Breakfast (daily). Welcome dinner on the first night in Baños. 1 day trip to the jungle. Tour of the waterfalls that surround Baños.

Cost of optional extras:
Taxi from airport to first night accommodation in Quito – $12 each way. Half day rafting trip – $18. Half day canyoning trip (repelling down waterfalls) -$15. Spanish lessons in groups – $5 per hour.
