2012 Met Life Nuestras Voces National Playwriting Competition

MISSION: In 2000 MetLife Foundation and Repertorio Español joined forces to establish The MetLife Nuestras Voces National Playwriting Competition in the hopes of discovering new American plays by established and emerging Latino playwrights writing about the many themes and topics relevant to the Hispanic communities across the United States—plays that may be under the radar in other venues.  It has been our privilege to promote and develop new plays, encourage bright new talent to continue writing plays by providing this forum.

2011 WINNERS

1st:    21 by Vincent Toro     Bronx, NY (San Antonio, TX) A casino trip to celebrate their son Blackjack’s birthday and his recent college graduation leads to conflict instead of reconciliation for the Valencia family. Vincent Toro is a Puerto Rican poet, playwright, performer, director, and educator. He is currently working on his MFA in Creative Writing at Rutgers University, and his plays have been staged at INTAR, The Point CDC, the Songs from Coconut Hill Festival of Latino Playwrights, The Urban Pop Theater Festival, The San Pedro Playhouse, The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, where he was the Theater Arts Director from 2006-2011. Vincent was also winner of the City of San Antonio’s Best Director award for his staging of Topdog/Underdog by Suzan Lori-Parks, and a finalist for the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Prize.

2nd:   American Jornalero by Ed Cardona, Jr.  NY, NY

3rd:    Brooklyn Bets Alexi by Elizabeth Irwin  Brooklyn, NY

Runner- up: Lilac Roses for Mama Inez by Milta Ortiz  Chicago, IL
