stART is a series of workshops providing professional development and networking opportunities to connect Arizona teaching artists and educators in support of lifelong learning in and through the arts. Designed to bring a local arts learning community together, each stART event is unique and offers something for educators, teaching artists, arts specialists, District Arts Coordinators, social service organizations, and local arts organizations. Come to expand your skill set or to explore potential collaborations for future arts learning projects.

Join staff of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Arizona Department of Education to demystify the world of Arts Education resources.  Learn more about the agency’s programs and services, find out about current grant opportunities and workshops, and discover new resources for you and your students!

Arts Standards and Assessment Overview
This 90 minute workshop will combine highlights of the two above workshops and be tailored to the participants in attendance: how are we using arts standards in our daily work, and how can we learn from one another regarding measuring student learning in the arts? We will look at assessment models, dive into the standards and talk about what works and what doesn’t work for us, our students, and in our rural settings.

Arts Standards in the Classroom
Our Arizona Arts Standards are 5 years old… so how we are using them in the classroom? How do they best support your teaching and your students’ learning? And what should we consider the next time we revise the standards? Join us for this interactive workshop to learn more about the standards and how you and your colleagues are using them successfully in our state. Measuring Student Learning in the Arts
As part of the Arizona Teacher Evaluation Framework, all subject areas without a state level assessment are beginning to look at measuring student learning in their areas. How can student learning be measured in the arts? What are some models from across the nation and around the state which can inform you and your district on building assessments to meet the Framework guidelines? And what are some of the pitfalls of arts assessment – both in terms of design, instructional practice, resources and time? Come join the discussion and feel free to bring your best arts assessment ideas to share!

stART Learning: Arts Integration – Learning, Assessment and Experience
Join expert presenters in a discussion that will provide definition, best practices and local focus in the area of arts integration. Participate in a hands-on arts integration lesson plan addressing content areas of Sonoran Desert Ecology and our unique relationship to water through poetry and movement. This session will provide an introduction to arts integration techniques and tools, and opportunities for exchange of knowledge, experience and practice.

stART Learning: Igniting the Spark of Creativity in Older Adults
Learning is a lifelong activity. This workshop will focus on the skills, variations or adaptations, challenges and rewards for teaching artists to consider when preparing to work with an aging population. The workshop will be led by two artists working in the field of creative aging. They will facilitate a thought-provoking, interactive discussion that is designed to be relevant to all levels of experience and all artistic disciplines. Come learn more about this exciting and fulfilling area of creative community building!

stART Learning: Reaching and Teaching Every Child
How can we help students not just master a specific body of knowledge or a specific set of skills, but help them master learning itself? Using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), this interactive workshop focuses on designing and delivering arts learning experiences that reach students of all abilities and learning styles. Participants will gain an understanding of the foundations of UDL, discuss theories and methods for teaching in inclusive environments, and engage in hands-on techniques that ensure progress for all students.
