The Arizona Music Educators Association was established in 1939 as a cooperative effort of music educators. It is an affiliate of MENC: The National Association of Music Education. Special interests in the Association are represented by four constituent organizations: The Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA), The Choral Directors of Arizona (ChoDA), The Arizona Society of General Music (AZSGM) and the Arizona Collegiate Music Educators (ACME). There are a number of departments within the Association that are led by appointed leaders. The National Coalition for Music Education, which is an advocacy group, is represented locally by the Arizona Coalition of Music Education and Community Performance. Other departments include membership, Music in Our Schools Month, early childhood development, curriculum development, retired members, multicultural awareness, music technology, student composition and pubic relations. AMEA supports the activity of the MENC collegiate chapters (student), and Tri-M chapters which are high school student honorary organizations in Arizona. AMEA and its constituent organizations produce over 50 interscholastic music activities on all grade levels as well as in-service training opportunities for the membership
