How Can I Use the Residency Roster? Colleges, concert associations, arts councils, after-school programs, schools, churches, social service organizations, parks and recreation departments and other organizations frequently sponsor artist-in-residence projects. If you or your organization are interested in bringing artists/ensembles/consultants into your community/school for a period of time, the Residency Roster is a good resource to help you identify excellent Arizona artists who are willing and able to work with you. The Residency Roster is not comprehensive, and you may have identified artists with whom you would like to work who are not on the Roster, or who are not Arizona-based. Artists in residence in a school or community generally plan and conduct residency activities in conjunction with the community or school sponsor. These projects involve the artist(s) and participants in activities such as creation, demonstration, performance, instruction, readings, displays, exhibitions, conversations, lectures and other opportunities geared to deepen the understanding and enjoyment of the art form. Residencies can take place over a period of a few days to several months. If you are looking for additional funds to supplement those you are able to commit, the Arizona Commission on the Arts may be one among many resources available to you. Funds for artist fee support are available through the Commission's Arts Learning Project Grants or Project Grants (Design/Public Arts; Festivals; Literature; Meet the Composer; Multidisciplinary Presenting/Projects; Performing Arts: Dance, Theatre, Music, Opera; Visual/Media Arts) which are awarded on a competitive annual basis. If you are an Arizona non-profit organization or school, you may apply to the Arts Commission for a grant to pay a portion of the guest artist(s)' fee and travel-related costs. For more detailed information and application forms, see the Commission's Guide to Grants: Organizations and Schools. Applications are due on a postmark deadline in March of each year for projects which will take place July 1 through June 30. You are welcome to discuss your project plans with the appropriate Arts Commission staff member.
